I don't like what is going on in the current story in our game and I have a much better idea. Can I change the direction of where the story is going myself?

Generally speaking, no.

It is usually not appreciated to make desicions that pushes the story in directions not approved by the GM. Therefore, always confer with the Game Master if you have ideas for the storyline. This is however something that is controlled by the specific rules of the game you are playing.

I disagree with this, if the member doesnt feel that they are able to control the storyline, they will quickly get bored and leave. I think the story is something with no clear direction. The GM might aim for a certain "ending" (broadly speaking of course because a PBEM game won't have an ending, only the ending to a certain story-arc), but this should be very open to change based on what each member posts.

As a GM I've had many stories derailed by players who have added factors which make my idea unusable, but this has also opened up new doors to a different way for the story to go.

Rememeber that a PBEM is a game, and it's interactive. We're not just filling in gaps n a pre-determined story because that is boring. Half of the fun is an ever-evolving story which might twist and turn depending on what is posted, it can be really fun and challenging to write your way out of unforseen scenarios.

I agree that we have to allow players to have a degree of control.  I always try to see where a player wants to go with his character, and then try to incorporate those ideas along with my own.  It usually works pretty good that way.

As a GM, I can honestly say that some of my favorite moments have been ones that I didn't see coming.  I like it when a player challenges his environment.  BUT I MUST CLARIFY!  The player has to be respectful of the overall theme, or there can be real problems.
